Fitness and the Holidays

The holiday season is filled with parties, tasty foods, travel and fun. With so much to enjoy, it can be challenging to maintain your fitness goals or even a sense of balance. All of my friends know how much of a sweet tooth I have and there is more than one video out there of me competing in an ice cream eating contest. I am not going to preach about avoiding all of the fun treats that only come around once a year (like Trader Joe’s Jingle Jangle!) but it is also important to keep in mind that at some point enjoying these tasty treats becomes too much. I don’t want you to be overly restrictive, so I figured we could discuss some simple strategies to help you navigate the holidays without completely derailing your progress. Here are some tips to stay healthy and fit this season:

Plan ahead:

  • Review your calendar and make exercise plans. Schedule time for workouts in advance so they don't get lost in the craziness of the season. Remember they are just as important as other meetings and priorities. This can also be helpful on those days that you ‘just don’t feel like exercising’ because you have already made a commitment to yourself.

  • Develop realistic, maintainable goals for your eating and exercise during this time. Don't try to maintain peak gym performance. Focus on maintaining the same consistency that you have had all year long.

Enjoy yourself without overdoing it:

  • Survey your options first before diving in. Choose only your very favorite indulgences and savor just a small amount.

  • Balance treats with healthier options like veggies, fruits, lean proteins and nuts. Watch portion sizes.

  • Stay hydrated with water and limit alcohol, sugary drinks and juices. Alcohol lowers inhibitions around food.

  • Manage hunger before parties by eating a balanced meal or snack. Avoid showing up hungry.

Keep Moving

  • Work activity into holiday fun like ice skating, dancing, playing active games with kids.

  • Schedule time for regular workouts, even if shortened. Do at-home exercises if needed (with a virtual trainer!).

  • Go for walks after big meals. Enjoy fresh air and burn extra calories.

  • Take exercise breaks when traveling or if busy with holiday tasks. Just 10-15 minutes of activity energizes.

The holidays are for enjoying time with loved ones, celebrating traditions and savoring food. With moderation, balance and consistency as your focus, you can maintain your fitness routine without feeling deprived. Be mindful, yet don't stress or beat yourself up. With a smart strategy, you can stay on track, release guilt and happily cruise into the new year!
